How To Become A Mystery Shopper

Mystery Shopping is a great way to earn a bit of extra money and get free products.

I first discovered mystery shopping while on maternity leave. I was home with the baby, which meant I had a lot of ‘spare time’ (if you can call it that), and was looking for ways to boost my income. Since I started I’ve had so many free products and meals, plus earned a little bit of extra cash. Most mystery shops are quick and easy to complete. You’ll be provided with a full brief which you need to follow carefully, then complete a report afterwards detailing your experience.

Market Force
My favourite company is without a doubt Market Force. Their assignments are updated so regularly, I usually do at least 1 a week. They also have an app which means it’s really easy to apply for assignments and complete your reports afterwards. They pay twice a month directly into your bank account. Register with Market Force

Mystery Shoppers Limited
I’ve done a few assignments with Mystery Shoppers Limited and found them pretty good to work with. They pay any time up to 30 days after you complete your assignment. Mostly you will be given a fake scenario which you have to act out, rather than completing a normal shopping experience. For example, you might have to go to a DIY shop and get a quote for a new bathroom, or contact a venue to enquire about booking a party. The reports are fairly easy to complete but the website isn’t that phone friendly!

Red WigWam
Red WigWam email me almost daily with different jobs. Not only do they do mystery shopping, but there are also other jobs available such as talking to shoppers, restocking shelves, checking merchandise is laid out correctly. I haven’t completed any assignments with them yet as there hasn’t been anything convenient to me, but I’m sure I will do soon.

Amber Arch
I heard good things about Amber Arch but unfortunately in the 4 months I’ve been signed up with them, they have never had any assignments within 15 miles of me.

There are a lot of other companies out there, and I am registered with about 5 or 6. As of yet I haven’t completed assignments with anyone else. My mission over the next 2 months is to try as many as I can so I’ll be updating this post in future.

Things you need to know:

  • You shouldn’t have to pay a fee to register as a mystery shopper – if they ask for one it’s likely to be a scam
  • Don’t give details about your shops! The word mystery is in the title, so don’t go sharing details on social media or elsewhere or you may not be invited to do any more!
  • Be aware you may have to pay some money out during your shop. Often you will be required to purchase a product/service and will be reimbursed later. Always check the assignment fee and reimbursement before you accept.
  • Companies are relying on you to give feedback about their business so be observant and most of all honest about your experience!
